Will Tata Motors Buy Aston Martin?
Aston Martin appears to be in the radar of yet another Indian car brand. Tata Motors has emerged as the second Indian suitor for the British sports car brand. The Birmingham Post has reported that Tata Motors Executives have held talks with Aston Martin.
We had earlier reported that the Majority stake owner of Aston Martin, Kuwaiti firm Investment Dar was planning to sell its stake and was having private interactions with potential buyers. One of the possible buyer was reported to be Indian SUV specialist Mahindra.
According to the Post, senior Tata Motors executives have spoken to Aston Martin. Although Aston Martin has always denied reports about it being on sale, there have been several reports about companies expressing interest to buy the Gaydon based sports car maker. One person has stated that the sale of Aston Martin will definitely happen and the questions to be answered were who and when?
Tata Motors already has a presence in the UK after it bought Jaguar and Land Rover. It remains to be seen if the experience of running two iconic British brands help the Indian firm add yet another British brand under its wings. The fact that both Jaguar and Land Rover are now profitable should be an encouraging sign for Tata Motors.
Aston Martin also has potential buyers from China and Japan too. Leading the pack is Toyota which is already associated with Aston Martin through the Cygnet city car. Tata Motors also has expertise in small city cars in the form of the Nano.
Tata Motors and Aston Martin are like night and day. While Tata Motors is a volume car maker focussed more on low cost transport for first time car buyers, Aston Martin caters to the upper cream of car buyers who look out for finesse, performance and luxury.
If Aston Martin does become a brand under Tata Motors, do not be surprised to see an Aston Martin badged Nano too.
