Tesla Launches New Model S Electric Sedan
Tesla, the American electric carmaker has launched its first mass marker electric car in the form of the stunning Model S sedan. The Palo Alto, California based carmaker held a ceremony to mark the launch of the Model S sedan at its plant. Ten Model S cars rolled out of the plant and three of them were delivered to customers who had ordered for it.
The Model S is Tesla Motors' ambitious project. The company has been supported by the American government too. It has been offered financial assistance and its cars are also subsidized by the government to attract car buyer who have always liked petrol cars.
Tesla Motors has stated that it had received more than 10,000 orders for the Model S. The new electric car runs on batteries and has a claimed range of 257 kilometres per charge. It has been priced at $49,900 after subsidy.
Tesla has been pioneering the cause of electric cars and its first car is the Roadster. It has not been able to sell as many Roadsters it wanted and its losses are said to have reached a whopping figure of $1 billion. The Model S is now being considered as a crucial model that will help Tesla recoup its huge losses.
The Tesla Model S will be competing against the likes of the Nissan Leaf which has already had more than 30,000 sales in the USA. However the leaf stands to have an advantage as its price is nearly half of that of the Model S. Tesla has a target of selling 5,000 Model S sedans this year, a comparatively sober target when compared with the Nissan Leaf.
Electric cars have had huge celebrity support in the USA with George Clooney buying a Tesla Roadster and many Hollywood celebrities buying hybrid cars. However, the general perspective about electric cars remains negati9ve as they do not have the range that an average American car buyers expects in a car.
The launch of the Model S can be considered as an important landmark for Tesla as it will be entering a more competitive area in terms of pricing. Tesla is said to be developing new, cheaper electric cars that will be launched in the coming years.
