Tata Confirms Nano Diesel, CNG Variants In 2013
The Tata Nano's diesel avatar has finally got official confirmation. There have been several reports about Tata Motors developing the diesel variant of its smallest car but the carmaker had never officially confirmed it until yesterday.
Karl Slym, Tata Motors Managing Director has stated that the company was on track to launch the CNG variant of the Nano in the first half of 2013 and follow it with the diesel variant in the second half of 2013.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Mr Karl Slym has said: " Plans in this regard are not on hold. We have talked about both of those variants.... The Nano CNG is within the sight of first half of next calendar year."
The Tata Nano diesel is expected to provide the much needed boost to the least expensive car in the world as it has so far struggled to make huge in roads in to the Indian car market. The Nano, according to Tata Motors Passenger Car Business Unit president Ranjit Yadav is slowly gaining popularity among buyers of other car segments too
Reports of the Tata Nano Diesel started trickling down after Bosch said it was working on developing a transmission for the Nano's diesel variant. Some people have also seen test mules of the Nano diesel around Tata Motors plant. With demand for diesel cars increasing exponentially, it was a given that Tata Motors would build the Nano diesel. But, the only question left to be answered was when.
The Tata Nano's CNG variant was first displayed at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. This variant will be a success only where CNG is available. The rest of the country will have to wait for the Nano diesel to get an affordable car that is affordable to run too.
