Mitsubishi To End Sedans In India, Focus On SUVs

The decision to concentrate only on SUVs has been driven by the low sales generated by the sedans. Further Mitsubishi is facing increased amount of competition from the other carmakers in the sedan segment. While in case of SUVs it has a niche market that it can exploit.
A Mitsubishi India spokesperson has stated that the carmaker will focus on SUVs, which are its main strength in the next few years. Taking special note of the Pajero the spokesperson added that the SUV was gaining popularity all over the world. He said Mitsubishi would venture in to other segments like sedans and compact cars only after establishing a strong foundation through SUVs.
Mitsubishi launched its Indian operations in collaboration with Hindustan Motors in 1998. The company has a manufacturing plant near Chennai. Mitsubishi has already started its transition out of the sedan market. It has stopped production of the Lancer sedan and will will withdraw the Cedia from showrooms in the coming months. The Cedia could only manage to find 69 buyers between April 2012 and October 2012, which helped Mitsubishi to take a call on selling sedans in India.
Mitsubishi has to still clear the existing stocks of the Lancer and Cedia before it is completely out of the sedan market. It has some how managed to sell the 12 Lancer X sports cars that it had imported as CBU.
Mitsubishi's decision to exit the sedan segment and concentrate on SUVs is also driven by the growing market for SUVs in India. With SUVs outselling even premium sedans, it is quite natural for Mitsubishi to dump sedans.
