Maruti Suzuki Gujarat Plant Plan Speeds Up
Maruti Suzuki's decision to put the Gujarat car plant on the fast track is contrary to earlier reports about the carmaker going slow on the new plant. Maruti Suzuki India's R C Bhargava had earlier stated that the Gujarat plant will become operational only after the existing production capacity in the firm's Manesar plant is fully utilised.
The growth in car sales for this year has been pegged at about 2% by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. Considering this Maruti Suzuki might not need the Gujarat plant until at least 2015. However, reports say the company's recent decision on the Gujarat plant is a result of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi holding talks with Suzuki's top brass in Japan.
Maruti Suzuki's plant in Gujarat will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh cars. The company has already paid an installment of Rs.22 crores for the land and has awarded a contract to build a wall around it.
Construction of Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant will begun in 2013 while new cars can roll out from the plant only by 2015-16. New models are being developed to be built at the new plant. Maruti Suzuki is planning on updating the existing line of models such as the Wagon R, A-Star and Alto K10 with new models. Some of these could be built in the Gujarat plant.
