Maruti 800 Exports Boosted By African Demand

The Maruti 800 which has been demoted to be sold only in tier III cities in India has found favour in the African countries of Egypt and Algeria. In fact, the Maruti 800 is such a success in Algeria that one fourth of the cars sold in the country are Maruti 800s. Of the total 8,300 Maruti 800s exported, 7,800 were sold in Africa.
The success of the Iconic Indian car in Africa is being attributed to the similarity in the buyer profile of people in India and Africa. About 4,000 Maruti 800s were sold in Algeria between April and October, while the total number of cars sold was about 16,000. Algeria has now become Maruti Suzuki's biggest importer overtaking Europe.
In case of Egypt, the market was slow due to the Arab Spring crisis. Despite this, the Maruti 800 was able to register 1,600 sales.
The Maruti 800 is expected to go completely off the roads in India in 2015 when BSIV emission norms are enforced across the country. However, Maruti Suzuki can continue building the Maruti 800 if it is able to meet emission standards of the countries where it is being exported to.
