Mahindra Might Stop Selling Automatic Scorpio

The Scorpio's automatic variant comes with a six speed gearbox which was imported. This variant is the top end variant and also has a four wheel drive system. Priced at Rs.12.63 lakhs (ex showroom Delhi), the Scorpio Automatic has not been the best selling Scorpio variant. In fact its sales consist of just about 5% of the total Scorpio sales.
The Scorpio VLX AT is the second least expensive diesel automatic car in India after the Hyundai Verna diesel automatic. We will soon be short of this vehicle if Mahindra's stock of automatic gearboxes runs out. Reports say Mahindra has stocks only for about two months.
Mahindra started facing automatic gearbox supply issues from 2009 itself. Drivetrain Systems International went bankrupt then but went on to supply gearboxes. The company which was supplying gearboxes to other carmakers too. Some of its clients are Ford, Chrysler and Ssangyong.
It is yet unclear if Geely intends to wind up DSI's operations. Mahindra which was planning to launch Ssangyong's SUVs in India could also face the same issue. Moreover, the Indian SUV specialist had earlier stated that it was developing an automatic variant of the XUV 500. The end of the Scorpio automatic could also indicate a possible delay in the launch of the automatic variant of the XUV 500.
The doubts regarding the XUV 500's automatic variant have cropped up due to the fact that Mahindra could have planned to source the automatic transmissions from either DSI or Ssangyong which was in turn purchasing them from DSI itself.
If you wanted to buy the Scorpio's automatic variant, then time is running short. While the two wheel drive VLX automatic does not have a waiting period, you will need to wait for 4 to 6 weeks for the four wheel drive automatic.
