Jaguar Land Rover Will Not Be Made In India Tata

Ratan Tata
Ratan Tata, the outgoing chairman of the Tata Group has stated that Tata Motor's prime international brands - Jaguar and Land Rover will not have full fledged manufacturing facilities in India. Mr Tata blamed some 'silly' taxes and low volumes for his decision.

Mr Tata said some Jaguar and Land Rover cars are currently being assembled in India. But added manufacturing of these premium cars in India will not be possible at least for now. He said manufacturing the cars under the existing tax structure would make it more expensive than assembling them.

The Tata Motors chairman has also said with current sales volumes of about 1,000 units a year did not justify the investment needed to manufacture Jaguar and Land Rover cars in India. The carmaker has to sell cars upwards of 5,000 units to consider local manufacturing.

Jaguar and Land Rover are currently building a plant in China and has also received an invitation from Saudi Arabia to build its plant. The Indian Government has so far not extended any such support to Tata Motors.

Mr Tata said the Indian government must do more to incentivise companies that bring in investment to India. This will not only help improve employment but will also make India an export hub. Jaguar and Land Rover have three plants in the UK.
