Tata Motors Confirms Compact SUV Development

Tata mini SUV
Tata Motors is set to enter the fast growing compact SUV segment by launching a new car that will take on the likes of the Mahindra Quanto, Renault Duster and the upcoming Ford EcoSport. Tata Motors' R&D chief Tim Leverton has revealed that the carmaker is developing a mini SUV based on the X1 platform on which it currently builds the Vista hatchback and Manza sedan.

Mr Tim Leverton has not revealed any more details about the Tata compact SUV apart from the platform. We expect the new SUV to share much of its components including engines from the Vista and Manza. The Tata Compact SUV in all likelihood will be a sub-four metre model and hence will be priced competitively against the Mahindra Quanto.

The compact SUV segment has emerged as a fast growing segment and Tata Motors has to concede that it was late in responding to the growing demand for mini SUVS. The Mahindra Quanto and Renault Duster have already been successful and the upcoming Ford EcoSport is also expected to follow suit.

There were earlier reports about a compact SUV from Tata Motors based on the Aria MPV. However these reports can now be considered to be false after Tim Leverton's revealed the X1 platform will be used for the compact SUV. The monocoque X1 platform is much better option than the body over ladder set-up being used in the Aria.

The compact SUV from Tata Motors will be aided by the company's decision to invest $1 billion in new product development over the next five years. The carmaker is looking at new products to revive its fading fortunes in the Indian car market where it hasn't enjoyed much success in recent months.

The carmaker will soon launch a CNG powered Nano and is expected to unveil a diesel variant too. The new compact SUV can be expected to make its way in to the Indian market at least as a concept during the Delhi Auto Expo in 2014. If Tata Motors can be quicker than our expectations, then we anticipate a late 2013 launch during the festive season.
