Honda Jazz, The Premium Hatchback – Review

By Super

Honda Jazz is the first small car from the Japanese carmaker in India. The Jazz sits in the top of the hatchback segment along with the Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20, Skoda Fabia etc. What makes it different from its peers is its classy design combined with quality features and excellent interior space.

The Jazz, a highly expected car, was first launched in India in 2009. Though appreciated for its quality and performance, the car wasn't well received in the market mainly due to its eye watering price tag at around Rs 7.5 lakhs.

Now, it's the upgraded Jazz which was launched last year that is available in the market. However, Honda has stopped taking bookings of the Jazz for a while now. The reason being Honda's incapability of delivering cars to customers due to its sky-high demand.

The less expensive 2011 Jazz comes at Rs 5.75 - 6.31 lakh. Honda has also added extra power and additional features like alloy wheels and fog lamps to the Jazz.

Coming to the design part, the car is beautiful with sharp lines, a premium front chrome grille, alloy wheels and ellipsoidal glass area making it more attractive. The compact dimensions of the Jazz makes it easy to push into tight parking spaces as well. The interior of the Jazz is extremely spacious (the Jazz is based on city sedan's platform) and features an attractive, live beige colour tone.

The new Jazz comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that delivers a fuel economy of 16.7 kmpl, decent figure considering the powerful engine which could also be found under the bonnet of the City sedan. The four-cylinder engine is capable of generating 90bhp at 6200rpm and 110Nm at 4800rpm. The powerful engine that enables the car to reach 100 kmph in just 11.2 seconds and a top speed of 165 kmph is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

The Jazz is available in 3 variants; Honda Jazz, Honda Jazz Select and Honda Jazz X and all the 3 variants are equipped with active safety features like dual front airbags, side airbags, ABS (Anti lock Brake System) and EBS. The additional features include leather seats, keyless entry, power steering, power windows, A/C, CD/MP3 players and automatic headlights.

Over all, the Jazz is a good buy if you are looking for a premium hatchback with some extra space and better driveability. It is also worth considering Honda's reliability and build quality which will keep the value of your car higher even after years. However, the only flaw of the Jazz is its lack of a diesel variant, a reason for Honda's declining sales of other cars as well. Though, the carmaker is said to be developing a new diesel unit which would account for most of the sales, at least in the Indian market.
