Mercedes-Benz C-Class On The Test Track

The Mercedes C250 CDI is powered by a 2.5 litre diesel engine paired with a tiptronic transmission. The automatic gearbox makes driving the car a pleasurable experience particularly while winding through heavy city traffic. We chose to drive the car the NICE road in Bangalore as the long stretches of tarmac and low traffic would allow us to test the C250 to its fullest extent.

The drive to the test track was quite uneventful as the automatic gearbox and the powerful 204bhp engine aided us to get away from slow moving traffic. As we entered the empty stretches of track in the NICE road, we turned our attention to the speedometer. When we thought the car was some where between 60 and 70kmph, the Mercedes C-Class was cruising at well over 100kmph.

The ease with which the Mercedes can accelerate is quite impressive. The gear shifts were so accurate and smooth that at times we could not even know when the transmission was doing its job. The relative ease with which you can drive the C-Class and the fine suspension make us feel you must start learning to drive in a Mercedes to enjoy driving.

The suspension is something we need to mention specially. The small potholes and road humps never made into the cabin while the large ones were felt just minutely. The suspension was soft enough to take in the disturbances from the road very efficiently. Such a soft suspension would usually mead there will be high body roll but the C250 never showed even a degree of uncomfortable body roll.

The handling and steering response is another impressive aspect of the C250 CDI. It was one of the major point of discussion during the entire period of the test drive. Just a minute turn of the steering would make the car turn the way you want it. At times we felt, just the thought of turning was enough to make the Mercedes move. Despite being a long car (just under 1.8 metres) the great handling meant we could make short U turns without much difficulty. One of our test drivers feels you can drive this Mercedes with just your little finger!

The brakes in the C-Class is another impressive feature. All you need is a mild touch on the pedal to bring the speed down. The disk brakes are very effective and they provide a sense of confidence to the driver.
