Bangalore Students Build Car With 240kmpl Mileage

11 Students from the Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology have built a light single seater vehicle to participate in the Shell Eco Marathon to be held at the Sepang race track in Malaysia. The event will be held between July 4 and 7 and will attract more than 150 teams from across Asia.
The car has been able to deliver such high mileage thanks to a modified Bajaj engine . The Shell Eco Marathon requires the car to deliver high mileage and the students have more than managed to achieve that goal. The car has been named Drona and the first prototype is ready for competition. Costing about Rs.2.5 lakhs, the 240kmpl Drona is probably a cost effective solution to reduce our fuel bills.
Since Drona has been developed to be driven on a flat race track, it does not have features such as suspension. It can achieve a top speed of 60kmph. The students have stated that they will develop a road legal version of Drona for city use if they get sponsorship and support.
Innovations such as these must be supported by carmakers. Such initiatives will not only hep reduce our dependence on fuel but will also help carmakers find young innovators to join their work force.
