Italian carmaker Fiat is reported to be interested to buy a 35% stake in troubled American carmaker Chrysler. With the recession in the United States taking a huge toll on car sales, all American car companies are struggling financially. Chrysler has been amidst the worst years in terms of profits. Its recent sales have come down drastically as its product portfolio only consists of gas guzzling vehicles which are no longer preferred by the average American car buyer.

Fiat on the other hand is a multi-brand carmaker which specializes in small cars. It also owns noted brands such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Abarth. Fiat is famous for small economic cars while Chrysler is the exact opposite. We have to wait and watch how these two brands can work together.

Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne had earlier stated that a car company during these tough economic times needs to sell as many as 6.5 million cars per year to remain profitable. With Fiat's sales just above half that figure, it is understood that he wants to add Chrysler's figures to reach his target. Experts say, the Fiat-Chrysler deal will also open up the American car market to Fiat.
