German premium carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been waging a long sales battle across the world. Mercedes which was the undisputed leader in the luxury car segment in India has got a shock of sorts after its rival overtook for the first time. BMW's sales in India has increased tremendously in the recent months which has helped it become India's best selling premium car brand.

The big players have brought their fight to India. In the current financial the Germans (BMW that is) have overtaken Benz in sales figure. Everything has been on the positive side for BMW with the 5 and 7 series alone selling 994 units compared to 493 last year. The portfolio of BMW for India is large. Last month alone BMW launched the new 3 series, the new 7 series, the diesel variant of X5 and the new X6. With 2094 units sold in 2008 alone, BMW recorded the highest sales figure in India so far.

Mercedes-Benz on the other hand continues to have the same model line-up with no new product launches in the pipe-line. It can be said the the Daimler AG car brand had not faced any competition and had so far had a laid back attitude towards sales in India. With BMW overtaking it now, can we expect Mercedes-Benz to deliver a brave fightback?
