Scorpio: The Stylish Indian SUV

By Super Admin

Mahindra has been one of the earliest automobile manufacturer in India and has number of power packed vehicles in it's list which were rocking Indian road as well as roads abroad for decades. Scorpio is the latest SUV from the family of Mahindra, may be the most popular sport utility vehicle in India today. It is no exaggeration to say that the scorpio is prominent among SUVs that India has fallen in love with. The large sized, chunky and chubby looks of the vehicle catches every eye and every minds.

In design and interiors Scorpio has all the characteristics of a sports utility vehicle. The size of the car makes loads of road presence. Scorpio has bagged many awards for its design and styling. The most important feature of Scorpio is that this car is diesel. In the new Scorpio the noteworthy change is the huge tail lamp cluster running all the way from the roof to the bumper. Most importantly, the car cops up with all the the Euro-III emission norms. The steering is grippy enough and is placed somewhat at the right spot. The instrument panel looks stylish with the oval dials and chrome bordering. Comfortable seats and spacious interior add to the beauty of the car. The dashboard has a new fiber and wood finish, which is quite nice. It has various features like child locks, collapsible steering column, side intrusion beams, fire resistant upholstery, high mount stop lamp, metallic paint, heating ventilation and AC with rear vents, fabric and vinyl combination seats, power steering, electronic instrument console with tachometer etc.

The excellent engine the best feature for the Scorpio. Originally the engine was a turbocharged indirect injection but later upgraded to a common rail unit which Mahindra calls CRDe. This 2600cc 4stroke turbo-charged inter-cooled common rail develops a very credible 115bhp at 3800rpm and 28.3kgm of torque between 1700-2200rpm. Scorpio has excellent bottom end, it pulls extremely well from low down, but it gets even better once that turbo kicks in. Even though the tachometer is calibrated till 8000rpm, the Scorpio can barely manage 4500. Average millage is 9-11kpl which is very good compared with other SUVs. Initial acceleration and the low-end torque is good. 60 km/h is achieved in 6 seconds, an improvement over the old Scorpio. The Scorpio runs on a 5 speed manual gearbox. The gear lever is at an angle to the dashboard. The gear ratios are well selected and can keep the engine on the boil, but overtaking may require some amount of down shifting.

Hi-tech suspension used in Scorpio is the proves the advanced engineering perfection of Mahindra. Earlier Scorpio had leaf spring suspension which was not best fitting to the car but teaming up with world leaders lotus UK Mahindra have finally fitted the Scorpio with much needed coil spring suspension. Riding a Scorpio on its new set of coil springs and anti roll bars is an excellent experience. The new suspension has also helped improve the overall handling. It definitely is built for the Indian road conditions.

Riding and handling is pretty well as this car is designed for both on road and off road conditions, though there are some shortcomings. The Scorpio created a wave in the Indian car market when it was launched and latest reports say that Mahindra is all set to take the car international. For all the improvements from the old Scorpio to the latest CRDe, customer need not pay too much as the price difference between the two models is just 10k, which of course is a minimum for the added comforts and technology.
