Automatic hatchbacks in India compared in terms of features, price and mileage.
Maruti Suzuki Ritz
Ritz automatic, offered in petrol as well as in the diesel variant is a sensible car to buy for a low price and with the added advantage of Maruti's reliable after sales service. The petrol and diesel engines perform smoothly with the automatic gearbox as well, except in the highway, where you'll feel the absence of a fifth gear. Feature wise the Ritz has ABS, EBD, power windows, tilt steering and the lot. Surprisingly for the price you pay there's no stereo.

Hyundai Grand i10
The Grand i10 is an even better city car than the i10 was. This is due to its spacious interiors and best in class fit and finish. The transmission on the other hand is the same as the one seen in the i20 and should perform similarly. More on that when you read about i20. In terms of features, however, the Grand i10 automatic loses to Ritz due to its lack of ABS and EBD even in the top of the line Asta variant.

Honda Brio
The Brio automatic fulfills almost all the criteria of a desirable city automatic car. It's small, nimble, handles exceptionally well, is powered by a very refined Honda engine and even has a 5-speed automatic transmission, which is one more than what Hyundai and Maruti automatics offer. This means the car performs better on the highway compared to Ritz or Hyundai Grand i10. What's more, you get ABS, EBD and front airbags as standard.

Nissan Micra
The Micra automatic is the one that comes closest to the Brio automatic in terms of drivability and handling be it city or highway, with the Brio being a tad better in most conditions. Where the Micra beats the Brio is in the features department. It has a richer set of feature list and feels more premium. Also, the Micra offers more interior and boot space than Brio. The major difference between the two comes due to the use of CVT transmission by Micra. As long as you are gentle with the throttle the CVT will always deliver better mileage than the Brio's five speed automatic.

Mahindra e2o
You cannot talk about automatic city cars and leave out the all electric e2o. The e2o is expensive for a car its size and there's no denying it. Having said that, if you do not mind spending the money and want to do your bit for the environment there is no better city car than the e2o. A full charge will easily get you to the end of the city and back. No parking hassles, it's easy to maneuver into gaps, and despite its small size it can comfortably seat 4. As for quick overtaking maneuvers nothing can beat an electric car and the e2o comes with a ‘boost" function specifically for that reason.

Verdict
Honda Brio performs exceptionally well on most counts. It handles and drives better than some of its competitors, offers safety features and has a refined engine. But the Micra could take its place if you prefer a more premium car with more space. If you swear by electric power nothing can satisfy you as much as Mahindra e2o.
