Crossover Comparo: Hyundai i20 Active Vs Toyota Etios Cross

Hatchbacks becoming crossovers is a trend that seems to be catching on in India. Over a short period, we have seen four crossovers enter the market—Volkswagen Polo Cross, Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross and now, the latest entrant, the Hyundai i20 Active.

Of the four, the Toyota Etios Cross has seen decent sales compared to the others. The Hyundai i20 Active being the new player, does it have what it takes to knock out the Japanese brand's claim to the throne?

The Hyundai is priced a little higher than the Toyota, giving the Etios Cross the upper hand.

The Hyundai i20 Active has the 2.0 Fluidic design. Up front, the vehicle has a hexagonal grille, projector headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and a front air dam with two-tone front bumper.

Toyota Etios Cross
The Toyota Etios Cross has fog lamps with integrated turn indicators, an integrated bumper guard. The vehicle features diamond cut alloy wheels and also has a rear defogger with wiper.

The Hyundai i20 Active reclaims the point it lost to Toyota. The i20 Active has a better looking design.

The Hyundai i20 Active's key features include an integrated 2-DIN music system with an 8-speaker system, auto light control, headlamp escort function and also a tilt and telescopic steering.

The Etios Cross on the other hand features driver seat height adjust, steering mounted audio controls piano black interiors and a 2 DIN audio system with Bluetooth, USB, AUX-in & remote.

Features is another segment that the Hyundai i20 Active wins hands down.

The i20 Active features a 1.4-litre diesel engine that produces 90 PS at 4000 rpm, that delivers 21.19 kpl; and a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 83 PS at 6000 rpm and delivers 17.19 kpl. It has a ground clearance of 190 mm and 15-inch wheels.

Toyota Etios Cross
The Etios Cross has a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 90 PS at 5600 rpm, delivering 16.78 kpl; a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 80 PS at 5600 rpm, delivering 17.71 kpl; and a 1.4-litre diesel engine that produces 68 PS at 3800 rpm, returning 23.59 kpl. The Etios Cross has a ground clearance of 174 mm and 15-inch wheels.

The Hyundai i20 Active has a more powerful diesel engine, while the Etios Cross offers better mileage, although the margin is very little.

Some of the key safety features of the i20 Active are cornering lamps, smart pedal, rear camera with steering adaptive parking guidelines and parking assist.

Coming down to the most important part—decision. The Hyundai i20 Active is priced a little higher than its best selling competitor but offers lot more as a package.
