Czech motorcycle manufacturer Jawa entered India in the 1950s and began manufacturing motorcycles in Mysore in the early 60s by Ideal Jawa India Ltd. However, due to lower demand, the company wound up its business in 1996.

With a massive cult following in India, the Jawa brand continued to enthrall bike enthusiasts. Will Jawa enthusiasts see a resurrection of the iconic brand in India? Well yes. Mahindra has obtained the brand license to sell Jawa motorcycles and more interestingly the company has revealed the launch details of the retro-styled bikes.

One of the reasons for Jawa motorcycles to be discontinued in India was its two-stroke engine as it could not scale up to offer an environment-friendly unit. But that has changed with Jawa introducing a 350cc OHC (Overhead Cam) four-stroke unit to comply with emission norms so that it can penetrate global markets.

Design

The Jawa 350 continues to offer the nostalgia of the 60s and 70s retro-styled motorcycle with its circular headlight, iconic and boxy fuel tank and a flat seat. The Jawa 350 features telescopic front forks and conventional dual spring suspension at the rear.

The bike's design is minimalistic with a whole lot of chrome added to the tank, headlamp, handlebar, rear view mirror and dual analog instrument console reminiscent of motorcycles from the bygone era.

Features

While the erstwhile Jawa hardly boasts of modern features, the present Jawa 350 is available with 305mm disc brakes, making the Jawa 350 the first motorcycle to get one, and drum brakes at the rear along with ABS. The motorcycle uses 19-inch wheels at the front and 18-inch wheel at the rear.

The Jawa 350 is equipped with a 17-litre fuel tank, and the bike weighs 154kg, a clear indication that Jawa has scaled up its development to meet modern requirements unlike some of its previous bikes such as 175, Monarch, Deluxe Road King and CL II lacked.

Engine Specifications & Gearbox

The Jawa 350 is powered by a 350cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine which cranks out 26bhp @ 5250rpm and 32Nm of torque @ 4750rpm and comes mated to a 4-speed gearbox. Jawa claims the 350 can sprint to a top speed of 120kph.

The four-stroke Jawa 350cc engine meets Euro 4 emission norms in Europe and comes with fuel injection and ABS, falling in line with present-day emission norms requirement.

With the launch confirmed to early 2019, it is to be seen if Mahindra will launch the same Jawa 350, available for Europe and other countries, in India or will there be a surprise regarding styling is to be seen when Mahindra is expected to showcase the Jawa 350 at the 2018 Auto Expo.

The Jawa 350 will rival the popular Royal Enfield Classic 350 in the Indian market and is expected to be priced in the same range as the RE. We expect Mahindra to be aggressive in pricing the Jawa in the range of Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh.
