NHAI Discontinues KYV Verification: Big Relief To FASTag Users

The Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that, from February 1, 2026, FASTag users will no longer be required to verify documents after their FASTag accounts are activated. The decision follows a surge in complaints from users over the sudden deactivation of FASTag accounts due to incomplete or unverified documentation.

What is FASTag KYV Verification?

The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process was originally introduced to verify whether the FASTag account was correctly linked to the registered vehicle number and associated bank account. This system was intended to prevent misuse and revenue leakage.

FASTag

Under the existing system, FASTags were often issued to customers primarily by banks, while document verification was carried out at a later stage. If users failed to complete the KYV process or submit the required documents within a specified period, their FASTag accounts were automatically deactivated. Reactivation will be done only after completing the document verification, vehicle details, and other mandatory information.

However, this process proved to be highly frustrating for many users. Several users were unaware of the KYV requirement until their FASTags stopped working. Others struggled with the process due to technical issues, lack of clarity, language barriers, or long verification times, adding more inconvenience.

FASTag

Currently, more than 40 banks across India issue FASTags. With the new regulation, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue KYV verification for private vehicles.

All necessary checks and verifications will now be completed before issuing a FASTag, ensuring that users do not face account suspension later. FASTag accounts will be activated only after the vehicle and document details are successfully verified through the VAHAN portal and the data is recorded in the system.

It is important to note that these new rules will apply only to private vehicles. Commercial vehicles, including trucks and fleet operators, will still be required to follow the KYV verification process, as the government believes higher risk factors are involved in commercial operations.
