Mahindra May Launch Hybrid SUVs In India By 2027, XEV 9e Likely First
Mahindra & Mahindra is reportedly exploring the possibility of introducing hybrid powertrains for its premium SUV lineup in India. The move comes as automakers prepare for the upcoming CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms, which are expected to impose significantly stricter emission standards.
Mahindra Evaluating Hybrid Powertrains for India
Mahindra is currently one of India's leading automotive manufacturers, with a strong presence in both the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle segments. The company has already committed an investment of around $1 billion toward its dedicated INGLO electric platform, which underpins models such as the Mahindra XEV 9e, Mahindra BE 06 and the upcoming Mahindra XEV 9s.

Electric vehicles accounted for approximately 9 percent of Mahindra's total sales in FY2026, reflecting the brand's growing success in the EV segment. However, with tightening regulations and evolving customer preferences, the company is now said to be evaluating hybrid technology as a practical intermediate solution.
The XEV 9e is likely to be the first Mahindra model to adopt a hybrid setup. Reports suggest that the coupe SUV could feature a range-extender system, where a small petrol engine is used solely to charge the battery pack while the electric motor drives the wheels. Mahindra is believed to be assessing two engine options for this application: a 1.2-litre and a 1.5-litre petrol unit.
Since Mahindra's Born Electric vehicles were originally developed exclusively for battery-electric powertrains, significant engineering work will be required to integrate hybrid systems. This would involve accommodating components such as an exhaust system, cooling hardware, transmission elements and other supporting mechanical parts.
Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid

Another model linked to the project is the recently updated Mahindra XUV700, often referred to internally as XUV 7XO. The SUV is currently offered with petrol and diesel engines, but it could receive a hybrid derivative around 2027.
Mahindra is not the only manufacturer which is evaluating alternative options for EVs. Several global and domestic automakers are increasingly viewing hybrid technology as a realistic near-term alternative to full electrification.
While electric vehicles remain the long-term objective, hybrids offer lower emissions, improved fuel efficiency and reduced dependency on charging infrastructure, making them an attractive new technology for the Indian market.
