Electric Car Retail Sales (April 2026) - 23,506 Units Sold, Up 75% Year-on-Year
India's electric passenger vehicle segment retailed 23,506 units in April 2026, up 75.14% year-on-year from 13,421 units in April 2025, according to FADA data covering 1,463 of 1,466 RTOs nationwide. Month-on-month, retail grew 4.52% from 22,490 units in March 2026.
Segment penetration climbed to 5.8% of total passenger vehicle retail in April 2026, compared to 5.1% in March 2026 and 3.7% in April 2025. The sequential gain is notable given April typically sees softer retail after March's financial year-end push.

Market Leaders
Tata Motors topped the segment with 8,543 units in April 2026, up 3.51% month-on-month from 8,253 units and 77.17% higher year-on-year from 4,822 units. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 5,413 units, growing 3.24% over March's 5,243 and 63.98% above April 2025's 3,301 units.
JSW MG Motor placed third at 5,006 units, slipping 2.63% from 5,141 units in March but still 32.54% above April 2025's 3,777 units. The three manufacturers together accounted for roughly 80% of total electric PV retail.
New EV Entrants Build Momentum
VinFast retailed 1,232 units in April 2026, a sharp 78.29% sequential gain from 691 units in March. Maruti Suzuki posted 1,231 units, up 29.72% from 949 units in March, with no comparable April 2025 figure available for either brand.
Hyundai retailed 516 units, up 8.40% month-on-month from 476, but down 30.92% year-on-year from 747 units in April 2025. BYD India held steady at 469 units, growing 13.29% over March's 414 and 17.84% over April 2025's 398 units.
Premium EVs
Kia India posted 342 units in April, down 25.33% from 458 units in March but up 905.88% year-on-year from just 34 units in April 2025. BMW India retailed 300 units, declining 31.35% from March's 437 units, though still 108.33% ahead of April 2025's 144 units.
Mercedes-Benz registered 104 units, up 7.22% month-on-month and 19.54% year-on-year. Tesla posted 43 units, down 12.24% from 49 units in March, with no April 2025 figure available.
Volvo retailed 41 units, up 86.36% from 22 units in March but 6.82% below April 2025's 44 units. Stellantis posted 25 units, declining 16.67% month-on-month and 50.98% year-on-year from 51 units in April 2025.
