Stress Remains The Leading Concern For Automotive Workers, New Survey From Ben Shows
Ben, a charity for the automotive industry, has released its annual health and wellbeing report. The survey, which included over 1,000 automotive workers, highlighted stress (57%), poor sleep (52%), anxiety (44%), low mood (41%), and lack of relaxation time (43%) as top concerns. Nearly all participants reported facing health and wellbeing challenges in the past year.
Poor work-life balance has worsened by 6%, now affecting 38% of workers, especially those in showrooms, parts departments, and garages. Long hours, understaffing, and heavy workloads are significant issues. Mental health scores have declined over the last year, with many workers feeling employers should offer more support. One in nine individuals reported inadequate mental health support at work.
The survey showed that mental health issues are more prevalent among automotive workers than other UK employees. These issues remain the most significant among the top ten concerns in the industry. Almost one in four workers is contemplating leaving the sector, with half citing poor mental health as a reason.
Financial worries continue to affect automotive workers significantly. One in six people admitted to skipping meals due to financial constraints, while one in five faced debt problems. Among those considering leaving the industry, a quarter reported financial difficulties.
The survey is now in its eighth year and aims to identify key health and wellbeing challenges within the automotive workforce. This helps Ben provide relevant services for industry members and their families. Rachel Clift, CEO of Ben, stated: "This year’s survey results shed light on the biggest health and wellbeing challenges facing our automotive family."
Clift added that these surveys allow direct communication with industry members to understand their issues better. This understanding helps Ben offer appropriate services and engage with employers to improve worker resilience and motivation.
