Luxury And Sports Car Manufacturers Contributing £5 Billion To Britain's Exports Annually

Britain's luxury and niche car manufacturers export nearly £5 billion in high-value products annually, according to a new report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). These companies, producing everything from hypercars to electric taxis, are a crucial part of the UK's diverse automotive sector. The industry supports over 15,000 jobs directly and an additional 60,000 through its supply chain.

The SMMT report highlights the economic significance of these manufacturers, which include renowned brands like Aston Martin, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce. In 2024, they generated more than £5.5 billion in revenue and accounted for 12% of the total value of UK car production. Despite making up only 4% of total production, their contribution is substantial.

The sector provides high-skilled jobs with an average salary of £43,729, which is 18% above the national average. It also plays a vital role in innovation, having invested £3.5 billion in research and development since 2020. This investment has led to advancements in lightweighting, hybrid powertrains, and aerodynamics.

However, small volume manufacturers (SVMs) face unique challenges such as volatile global trading conditions and the push towards decarbonisation. The bespoke nature of their products means longer development cycles and higher production costs. The industry is calling for supportive government policies to address these issues.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes emphasised the importance of these brands to the UK economy. He stated that collaboration with the government is essential for the sector's survival and growth amid geopolitical challenges. "A successful sector would deliver economic growth," he noted.

The UK government recognises this sector's value and aims to support it through trade deals with countries like the US and India. These agreements are expected to reduce tariffs and create new export opportunities for British carmakers.

Future Directions for Small Volume Manufacturers

The report outlines several measures for supporting SVMs: recognising their contribution in industrial strategies, providing flexible pathways for decarbonisation, increasing access to R&D funding, addressing market access barriers in trade negotiations, and enabling workforce transition through upskilling initiatives.

Catherine West from the Foreign Office highlighted that Britain's luxury car makers drive innovation and create high-skilled jobs. Industry Minister Sarah Jones added that these iconic brands are crucial to the UK economy's strength.

The SMMT event showcased models from Aston Martin, Bentley, LEVC, Lotus, McLaren, and Morgan at a ministerial engagement in London. This gathering aimed to reinforce the importance of these manufacturers within both domestic and international markets.

The Broader Automotive Industry

The UK automotive industry is a significant contributor to the economy with a turnover of £93 billion annually. It employs nearly one million people across various sectors including manufacturing and logistics. The industry exports vehicles to over 140 countries worldwide.

With ongoing investments in R&D amounting to around £4 billion each year, the sector continues to innovate across different vehicle types including cars, vans, buses, trucks as well as specialist vehicles supported by skilled engineers.

As Britain's automotive industry navigates challenges like decarbonisation while maintaining its global presence through strategic trade deals; it remains committed towards fostering innovation alongside economic growth across all regions within UK borders.
