New Safety Ratings For Trucks! Nitin Gadkari Sends Shockwaves Through Commercial Sector
Plans to introduce safety ratings for trucks and heavy commercial vehicles were announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. This initiative will involve crash tests similar to the Bharat NCAP method used for cars. Vehicles will receive safety ratings from 1 to 5 stars based on these test results. Gadkari shared this information at an event organized by the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE).
Including buses and trucks in this safety rating system aims to encourage manufacturers to enhance production standards, leading to increased vehicle safety. New regulations are also being developed for electric rickshaws due to existing safety concerns. The government is creating standards and safety rating protocols for battery-operated electric rickshaws, which is expected to improve their quality and create more job opportunities.

Gadkari emphasized that updating road safety, expanding secure highways, ensuring vehicle safety, and promoting electric vehicles (EVs) are government priorities. In 2023, he introduced Bharat NCAP with the goal of enhancing road safety standards for motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. India faces a high number of road accident fatalities annually, with 1.8 lakh deaths occurring in 4.8 lakh accidents each year.
The government is focusing on reducing freight transport costs from the current 14-16% to 9% in the coming years. This measure is part of greater efforts to improve efficiency in the transport sector, which is expected to lead to significant growth in the Indian economy. Establishing regulations for the working hours of truck drivers is another crucial initiative.

Currently, truck drivers work 13-14 hours daily, raising concerns about fatigue-related accidents. By enforcing proper working hours, the number of accidents can be significantly reduced. Road safety is a primary concern for the government; they are committed to creating secure highways across India and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
Therefore, road accidents are likely to decrease significantly in India over the next few years. Meanwhile, the Indian government's actions are expected to lower the cost of freight vehicles. The introduction of working hour frameworks for freight vehicle drivers in India could lead to more job opportunities for drivers.
There is also no need to believe that costs will increase. This will lead to faster delivery of time-sensitive cargo, helping offset any increased costs. Gadkari's initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach towards enhancing road safety and efficiency in India's transport sector.
