Nissan LEAF Batteries Power Second Life Energy Storage System At Rome’s Fiumicino Airport
Nissan is playing a significant role in advancing clean energy at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, Italy's largest international airport. The company has contributed to a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that supports Aeroporti di Roma's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. This initiative highlights the potential of repurposed electric vehicle batteries to provide sustainable energy solutions beyond their original use.
The BESS, with a total capacity of 10 MWh, incorporates 84 reconditioned Nissan LEAF batteries, providing 2.1 MWh of energy storage. These batteries are integrated into Enel's Energy Storage System by Loccioni. The system is paired with a solar farm consisting of 55,000 panels, expected to generate 31 GWh of renewable electricity annually for the airport.
The second-life batteries used in this project come from high-mileage vehicles and warranty returns. They have been requalified to meet stringent safety and performance standards. Nissan anticipates these batteries will remain functional for over six to seven years at the airport, even with daily use.
Soufiane El Khomri, Nissan Energy Director for the AMIEO region, stated: "This project not only demonstrates the long-term viability of repurposed EV batteries in demanding environments but underscores Nissan’s commitment to sustainable end-of-life battery management." He emphasized Nissan's responsibility for recycling these batteries once they reach the end of their useful life.
Nissan has a history of successful collaborations with Loccioni and Enel on similar projects. Previous initiatives like the Melilla ESS in Spain have proven the effectiveness of second-life battery technology in delivering stable renewable energy solutions. El Khomri added that turning potential waste into valuable energy assets supports large-scale projects and shows promise for home use during power outages.
Enrico Loccioni, President and founder of Loccioni, commented: "We are integrators of people, ideas, technologies." He highlighted that the Pioneer project bridges energy and mobility towards decarbonization while maintaining quality and sustainability at its core.
Nissan's Global Vision
Nissan AMIEO covers Africa, the Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania markets. Employing over 19,000 people across 140 markets with a population of around 3.8 billion, it offers a wide range of vehicles including the Nissan Patrol SUV and fully electric models like the Nissan Ariya.
Sustainability is central to Nissan's Ambition 2030 vision which aims for carbon neutrality across product life cycles by 2050. This includes delivering electrified models globally and supporting technological innovation in key markets.
This initiative at Fiumicino Airport exemplifies how second-life EV batteries can be repurposed effectively to support large-scale clean energy projects while contributing to broader sustainability goals.
