Mazda Models Recognised As Safe Choices For Teen Drivers By IIHS And Consumer Reports
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced that nearly all Mazda models are included in the updated list of recommended vehicles for teens by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports (CR). This list, created since 2020, aims to help families choose safe vehicles without overspending. Teen drivers face higher risks due to inexperience, making vehicle choice crucial.
Both new and used Mazda vehicles on the list have received average or better scores from CR for braking and handling. They also meet usability standards for controls and displays, ensuring that confusing setups are avoided. All these vehicles come with standard electronic stability control, enhancing safety.

Jennifer Morrison, Director of Vehicle Safety Strategy at MNAO, stated, "The most dated car in the driveway may not be the best choice for your teen." She added that many affordable Mazda vehicles are equipped with advanced safety technology. "Mazda is proud to have vehicles in nearly every category to choose from," she said.
For crash protection, recommended used vehicles have good ratings in five IIHS tests: moderate overlap front, side, driver-side small overlap front, roof strength, and head restraints. New vehicles on the list are winners of the 2025 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards. These awards indicate excellence in newer crash tests.
The best new Mazda models for teens include the Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan for small cars. In the small SUV category, the Mazda CX-30 and CX-50 are recommended. For midsize SUVs, the Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 are top choices.
The recommended used small cars include the Mazda 3 sedan (2014-19; post-October 2013) priced at $5,000 and the Mazda 3 hatchback (2019 or newer) at $12,100. The midsize car option is the Mazda 6 (2016-18) available for $7,300.
Used Vehicles Offer Value
In small SUVs, options like the Mazda CX-3 (2016-19) priced at $6,800 and the newer model (2020-21) at $12,900 stand out. The Mazda CX-5 (2014-19; post-October 2013) is available for $7,200. For midsize SUVs, consider the Mazda CX-9 (2017-20; post-November 2016) at $9,800.
Morrison expressed her confidence in these safety features: "Having a teen driver myself, I find peace of mind knowing they are behind the wheel of a vehicle with top safety ratings and systems like automatic emergency braking and seat belt reminders." She emphasised that these features reduce crashes and injuries.
