This South State Implements Mandatory Alcohol Testing For Bus Drivers: All Details Here

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced mandatory alcohol testing for all government bus drivers before they begin their shifts. This measure aims to ensure that drivers are not under the influence while operating buses, enhancing road safety.

Special equipment, including breathalyzers, has been acquired for this initiative. Initially, the program is being implemented in Chennai's bus depots. Previously, such tests were conducted sporadically, but they are now compulsory. Drivers must pass the test to commence their duties, and those who fail will face disciplinary action.

Tamil Nadu s New Alcohol Testing for Bus Drivers

In recent times, videos of bus drivers allegedly driving under the influence have surfaced online. To address this issue, breathalyzers have been distributed to each depot. This ensures that drivers are sober before starting their routes. The government hopes this will reduce accidents involving state-run buses.

Statistics reveal a concerning trend in bus-related accidents. In the 2022-23 financial year, 906 accidents resulted in 1,000 fatalities. The following year saw 971 accidents with 878 deaths. The government is determined to lower these numbers through stricter regulations and testing.

During the breathalyzer test, a permissible alcohol level is set at 10-15 mg per 100 ml of blood for bus drivers. If a driver's level exceeds this range, they are not permitted to work. Those with levels above 30 mg will face further consequences.

Driving under the influence impairs a driver's ability to focus and maintain composure on the road. This is particularly concerning given the number of temporary drivers employed by the government. Termination remains the primary consequence for those found guilty of such offences.

Consequences and Legal Implications

Accidents involving private vehicles often result in insurance claims. However, victims of government bus accidents must seek compensation through legal channels. The State Transport Corporation allocates Rs. 60 crore annually for accident relief.

This initiative to ensure sobriety among bus drivers is commendable, though it highlights a significant issue within public transport safety protocols. With these measures in place, passengers can anticipate safer journeys on government buses.
