Kia Unveils PV5 WAV: A Wheelchair Accessible Electric Vehicle For Enhanced Mobility
Kia has introduced the PV5 WAV, a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit in London. This unveiling, done in partnership with Motability Operations Ltd., highlights Kia's dedication to improving mobility for people with disabilities. The PV5 WAV is designed to maximise the benefits of electric vehicle architecture, addressing challenges faced by wheelchair users and their families.
The PV5 WAV is equipped with a side-entry system, third-row tip-up seat, and curb-side access. These features enhance safety and convenience for users. The model will be produced at Kia's Hwaseong EVO Plant in Korea, ensuring an eco-friendly manufacturing process. This initiative aligns with Kia's vision as a Sustainable Mobility Solutions Provider.
Kia plans to extend its PBV WAV offerings to more regions worldwide. This expansion is part of its strategy to provide sustainable mobility solutions globally. The company aims to meet the increasing demand for accessible vehicles due to factors like longer life expectancy and aging populations.
In February 2025, during Kia EV Day, the company announced its collaboration with Motability Operations. Motability is the largest vehicle leasing company in the UK, offering affordable and accessible vehicles through its scheme. This partnership underscores Kia's commitment to customer-centric eWAVs.
The PV5 WAV includes a quick-use wheelchair entry ramp rated at 300kg and a specially developed wheelchair belt fastening system. These features ensure ease of use and safety for wheelchair users. Additionally, local specialists will handle rear-entry conversion specifications globally.
The vehicle integrates necessary applications for individuals with disabilities using the AAOS open software platform. This integration enhances user experience by providing essential functionalities tailored to their needs.
Kia’s Commitment to Accessibility
Kia has been committed to enhancing accessible mobility since 2012 through various initiatives like the "Green Trip" project in South Korea. In 2021, Kia expanded its efforts globally by conducting a universal mobility research project in Los Angeles, USA, focusing on car-hailing services for those with specialised mobility needs.
Sangdae Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of PBV Division at Kia, stated: "The PV5 WAV is more than just a vehicle; it’s a gateway to independence and freedom for those with mobility challenges." This statement reflects Kia's dedication to creating inclusive transportation solutions.
The introduction of eWAV options is crucial as traditional ICE vehicles used for conversions are being phased out. With transport operators expanding their services and policy changes occurring in certain markets, eWAVs play a vital role in meeting future demands.
