India To Shift To Electronic Toll Plazas: No More Barriers, No More Waiting
India is set to transition to a fully electronic toll collection system, replacing the physical toll booths. The new automatic tolling network is expected to be introduced by 2026, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and long queues in toll plazas.
The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways stated that all existing toll plazas in India are expected to shift to an electronic format starting from next year. Trial runs are already underway at different locations nationwide.
Electronic Toll Plazas
Under the proposed model, toll plazas in India will use cameras that read vehicle number plates. These devices will scan the registration plate as it passes the toll. The toll amount will then be debited directly from the bank account linked to that vehicle. Vehicles will not need to halt or even slow down at the plaza.

This approach differs from the current FASTag-based toll plazas in India. At present, owners must recharge a FASTag account. When a vehicle reaches a toll lane, it stops briefly. A scanner reads the tag and deducts money from the linked prepaid wallet. Only after this process can the vehicle proceed.
With the new electronic toll plazas in India, there will be no physical barriers or gates. The system is designed to capture plates even at higher speeds. This method of toll collection will reduce traffic build-up and long queues at toll plazas. This will also lower idling, thereby cutting the unnecessary fuel used in toll booths.
Currently in the trial phase, the technology is expected to be adopted nationwide at a rapid pace. A fully automated system will significantly improve the vehicle flow on busy national highways.
The government also introduced a separate annual pass system in August 2025. The annual pass costs ₹3,000 per year and allows 200 crossings/year, limiting the price to just 15 per crossing. The scheme is available only for personal vehicles, while commercial and transport vehicles are excluded.

There have been frequent concerns and complaints about high toll charges and delays at toll plazas in India. The combination of automatic number plate scanning and the optional annual pass is intended to reduce time loss and travel costs for regular users. If implemented, the daily highway commutes could become smoother and more peaceful.
