Hyundai Motor And Tate Appoint Máret Ánne Sara As Next Hyundai Commission Artist Until 2036
Máret Ánne Sara, a Northern Sámi artist, will create the next Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. Her work will be on display from October 14, 2025, to April 6, 2026. Known for exploring ecological issues through her Sámi heritage, Sara's art often highlights the impact of Nordic colonialism on Sámi life.
Hyundai Motor and Tate have extended their partnership until 2036. This collaboration supports both the Hyundai Commission and the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational. Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, stated that this partnership fosters dialogue through art that transcends boundaries.
The Hyundai Commission has attracted over 18 million visitors since its inception. Artists interpret the vast space of the Turbine Hall, creating memorable artworks like Kara Walker's fountain and Anicka Yi's floating lifeforms. The Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational was established in 2019 to explore global art histories.
Karin Hindsbo, Director of Tate Modern, expressed excitement about Sara's upcoming work in the UK. "Máret Ánne Sara is among a prolific group of Sámi artists who have received widespread international attention in recent years for making visible the issues facing Sápmi and Sámi people," she said.
Sara was born in Guovdageaidnu, Norway, into a reindeer herding family. Her multidisciplinary practice uses materials from reindeer herding to create sculptures and installations. These works emphasize the connection between animals, land, water, and humans.
The Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational has challenged Eurocentric narratives and explored contemporary British art from Caribbean perspectives. It recently examined artists working at the intersection of art and technology in Tate Modern’s Electric Dreams exhibition.
Future Collaborations and Initiatives
