Cyclone Shakti: Top 7 Tips To Protect Your Car & Official Weather Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon, marking its onset over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and some areas of the north Andaman Sea. This signals the beginning of India's rainy season, and here are key tips to protect your car from cyclone Shakti and floods.
Precautions for Cyclone Preparedness
Cyclones can cause significant damage in low-lying areas prone to flooding. While homes often take priority during preparations, vehicles are also at risk. Here are seven practical ways to protect your car when a cyclone approaches:

- Park on Higher Ground: Move your car to higher ground if you live in a low-level area before the storm hits to avoid flood damage.
- Use Covered or Indoor Parking: Park your car in a garage or sturdy covered space whenever possible to protect it from debris and strong winds.
- Cover Your Car: Use a high-quality waterproof car cover if a garage isn't available for basic protection against rain and debris.
- Disconnect the Battery: Disconnecting the battery can prevent short circuits if your car floods.
- Seal All Openings: Ensure windows and doors are tightly shut; use weatherproof tape if necessary.
- Avoid Parking Under Trees or Power Lines: High winds can bring down branches or lines; choose an open area instead.
- Document Your Car's Condition: Take photos before the storm for insurance claims if damage occurs.
Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is being monitored in the Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists predict a low-pressure system may form between May 16 and 22. This system could intensify into Cyclone 'Shakti' between May 23 and 28. If it develops, landfall might occur between May 24 and 26, affecting coastal regions in Odisha and West Bengal in India, as well as Khulna and Chattogram in Bangladesh.
Weather Alerts Across India
In Karnataka, a yellow alert has been issued due to ongoing pre-monsoon showers. Kolkata is expected to experience thunderstorms and light to moderate rain starting on May 15 evening. Scattered to widespread rainfall is anticipated across Northeast India until May 17, particularly affecting Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
Central and eastern states such as Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim are likely to see moderate rainfall during this period. Isolated heavy showers are forecast over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands until May 16. Southern states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana will continue receiving moderate rain through May 17.
