Maserati MSG Racing Encounters Difficulties During Shanghai EPrix Race Weekend
Maserati MSG Racing faced challenges during the Shanghai EPrix, with energy management taking centre stage. Despite a promising start, issues with Pit Boost hindered their performance. Both Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne showed potential in practice sessions but couldn't convert it into points due to technical setbacks. The team aims to learn from these experiences for future races.
The Shanghai EPrix marked a return to permanent circuit racing, highlighting energy management's importance. Maserati MSG Racing began the day with promise but struggled to secure points due to Pit Boost failures. Both drivers demonstrated speed during practice at the Shanghai International Circuit, yet qualifying didn't yield duels appearances.
Jake Hughes narrowly missed a duels spot by mere hundredths of a second, starting ninth on the grid. Both drivers managed early race positions well, with Stoffel Vandoorne adopting an early Attack Mode strategy. Jake focused on track position before initiating his first Attack Mode.
Following Tokyo's approach, Stoffel was among the first to enter the pit lane for Pit Boost. The top twelve, including Jake, delayed their Pit Boost until later in the window. Unfortunately, both cars experienced Pit Boost charger failures at this critical moment, impacting their race outcome significantly.
Maserati MSG Racing attempted to recover lost positions, but energy consumption became crucial. Jake and Stoffel used their final Attack Modes in the race's closing laps but couldn't reclaim points positions due to time constraints.
Driver Reflections
Jake Hughes expressed disappointment: "In the end, what was looking like a very strong and positive day has ended on a flat note." He noted that despite strong practice sessions, qualifying issues persisted with new tyres affecting grip. "The race was looking very strong; I was leading at one point," he added.
Stoffel Vandoorne shared his experience: "That was a difficult race. We were going pretty good after the start; took attack mode early." He highlighted how Pit Boost issues cost them valuable seconds and forced strategic changes. "We had an issue with the charger and we lost a good number of seconds," he explained.
Team Insights
Cyril Blais, Team Principal of Maserati MSG Racing, acknowledged the day's challenges: "Disappointing day today overall, especially the race." He emphasised that despite having a decent strategy targeting top six finishes, Pit Boost problems hindered progress. "We tried our best but couldn’t do better than the edge of the points," he stated.
Maria Conti from Maserati Corse reflected on Shanghai's significance: "We knew that the Shanghai double-header would be challenging." She noted that racing in China evokes intense feelings and provides learning opportunities for future goals. "The team are taking home from today's race a series of important lessons," she remarked.
