Acura Meyer Shank Racing Achieves Third Place Finish At Road America SportsCar Grand Prix
The #93 Acura Meyer Shank Racing team secured a third-place finish at the SportsCar Grand Prix at Road America, enhancing their position in the IMSA manufacturers' championship. Despite challenges, the team remains competitive as they head towards the next race.
Nick Yelloly and Renger van der Zande secured third place for Acura Meyer Shank Racing at the SportsCar Grand Prix, Road America. Starting from pole, Yelloly navigated a caution-heavy race, with 22 of 66 laps under yellow flags. Van der Zande took over to finish in third. This marks the third podium this year for the #93 Acura ARX-06 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The #60 team of Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun faced challenges despite a strategic gamble. An incident in the pit lane resulted in a penalty, pushing them to the back. They managed to climb back to seventh by the end of the race. The #93 team's consistent performance has kept Acura competitive in the manufacturers' championship.
Acura is now just 45 points behind Porsche in the manufacturers' standings, with two GTP rounds remaining. The #93 team previously won at Detroit and placed third at Sebring with Alex Palou. Honda Racing USA will increase its involvement in 2025, providing strategy and engineering support for the GTP car.
Renger van der Zande commented on their strategy at Road America: "Road America is always exciting, but it's always a bit of a gamble with the strategy here. That’s how it turned out to be again today." He acknowledged BMW's successful gamble and praised their own pace and result for Acura's championship points.
Tom Blomqvist described their race as challenging due to strategic missteps and an unfortunate pit lane incident: "It was a challenging race, just got unlucky there... With the penalty, it just put us on the back foot." Despite these setbacks, they were pleased with their recovery to seventh place.
Colin Braun explained their initial strategy: "On the 60 side, a little bit of a tough day... We got a yellow at the wrong time." A collision during a driver change led to a penalty that hindered their progress throughout the race.
Looking Ahead
David Salters, President of Honda Racing Corporation USA, expressed satisfaction with their performance: "All in all, it was a good weekend. Pole position and a podium is still a good outcome." He emphasized their focus on gaining ground in the manufacturer's championship as they prepare for Indianapolis next month.
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTP class will continue at Indianapolis on September 21st for the TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks. Acura aims to maintain momentum as they approach this penultimate endurance round of the season.
