30 Years Of The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: Celebrating A Legacy Of Quality And Innovation In Commercial Vehicles
Mercedes-Benz's Sprinter van, launched in 1995, has become a symbol of quality and innovation. It is on track to surpass five million units sold by 2025. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart will showcase the first-generation Sprinter alongside the current models, including the eSprinter. This display highlights the vehicle's enduring impact on businesses and industries worldwide.
The Sprinter has been a game-changer in the light commercial vehicle market since its introduction. As the first Mercedes-Benz van with a distinctive name, it set new standards for quality and innovation. The van remains popular among businesses and fleet operators due to its versatility and customisation options. Today, 75% of all Sprinters are tailored to meet specific industry needs.
In 1995, Mercedes-Benz introduced the Sprinter, marking a new era for vans. It was the first Mercedes-Benz van with a name rather than numerical codes, succeeding the T1/TN series. The initial model featured advanced safety features like disc brakes and ABS as standard, setting it apart from competitors.
By 2000, Mercedes-Benz enhanced safety with updates such as standard driver airbags and optional passenger airbags. In 2002, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) became available, further solidifying Sprinter's reputation for safety innovation in commercial vans.
The second generation arrived in 2006 with more options for customers. They could choose from three wheelbases, four lengths, and three roof heights. ESP became standard on closed versions up to certain weight classes by 2008. BlueEFFICIENCY technology was introduced in 2009 to improve fuel efficiency.
The third-generation Sprinter debuted in Europe in 2018 with front-wheel drive and MBUX multimedia system integration. This system allowed voice command interaction with fleet services. Safety features like DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist were also added to enhance driver convenience.
In 2019, Mercedes-Benz launched the eSprinter cargo van in Europe. This battery-electric model offered CO2-emission-free mobility for various business operations. The eSprinter's modular platform allows customisation for different commercial applications.
Celebrating Three Decades of Excellence
Klaus Rehkugler, Head of Sales & Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans stated: "With the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, we have had an iconic van in our portfolio for 30 years now... For three decades, it has been shaping people's lives and keeping the world running." The quote underscores the vehicle's significance across various sectors.
The latest eSprinter model offers two body styles and lengths along with two battery sizes. It boasts a range of up to 478 kilometres (WLTP) or approximately 297 miles. Its flexible architecture supports industry-specific solutions for upfitters and conversion specialists.
