Volvo XC90 Retains IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ Award Status For 2024 With Exceptional Ratings

The Volvo XC90 luxury SUV has once again secured the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). To achieve this accolade in 2024, vehicles must excel in several safety tests, including small overlap front and updated side tests. They also need to have good or acceptable ratings for pedestrian crash prevention and headlights across all trims.

The XC90, available in both mild hybrid (B5, B6) and plug-in hybrid (T8) versions, meets these stringent criteria. It received a top rating of good in the updated side test. "At Volvo Cars, we always put safety at the center of everything we do," said Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. "The Volvo XC90 continues to prove, year after year, that it is among the safest cars on the road."

Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in the XC90's design. The vehicle incorporates an advanced safety cage and a comprehensive suite of active safety features. These systems are developed from over 50 years of research into real-world accidents. The car can detect lane drift using radar and a front camera, steering you back safely to avoid collisions.

The XC90 also helps prevent unintended road departures and can use braking and steering to avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals like moose. Standard safety features include front crash prevention, Automatic Emergency Braking, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), Whiplash Protection System (WIPS), and Run Off-Road protection.

In addition to its impressive safety credentials, the XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 32 miles of all-electric driving in Pure mode and achieves a combined fuel economy of 58 MPGe. Sustainability is integral to Volvo Cars' operations as they aim for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
