Volvo XC60 T6 Plug-in Hybrid Wins Towcar Of The Year 2025 And Multiple Awards
The Volvo XC60 T6 Plug-in Hybrid AWD Plus has been named the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year 2025. This vehicle also triumphed in three other categories: Caravan weight over 1800kg, Family Towcars, and Hybrid Towcars. Judges praised its towing prowess, ease of driving, comfort, and spacious interior, making it a top choice for caravanners.
In this year's competition, 33 vehicles were rigorously tested at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground. The cars were categorised by caravan weight rather than price to help buyers identify suitable towcars. Categories included Pick-Up Towcars, Family Towcar, Large Family Towcar, Electric Towcar, Hybrid Towcar, and Luxury Towcar.
Electric vehicles made a strong showing with six plug-in hybrids and nine pure electric entries. The variety was impressive, ranging from estate cars to luxury SUVs and crossovers. Notable entries included the Ineos Grenadier and Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric saloon.
The Volkswagen ID.7 Match Pro 77kWh 286PS won the category for caravan weights under 1200kg. It impressed with its spacious interior and smooth ride. Depending on trim, it can travel up to 436 miles on a single charge.
The Volkswagen Golf Estate Style 1.5 eTSI 150PS DSG excelled in the 1200kg - 1300kg category. Judges appreciated its nimble handling and comfortable ride. The ŠKODA Superb Estate took top honours in the 1300kg - 1500kg range with its roomy interior and smooth driving experience.
The BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro Touring stood out in multiple categories: Caravan weight 1500kg - 1600kg, Electric Towcars, and Luxury Towcars. Its luxurious features and engaging handling impressed judges.
Testing Process
Each car underwent extensive evaluation at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground near Bedford. Vehicles capable of towing over 750kg were eligible for testing. The Club's Scrutiny team ensured each car met standards before testing began.
Caravanability judges assessed whether each vehicle could accommodate typical caravanning accessories. They measured towball height both solo and hitched up while checking manufacturer-provided towing information.
Judging Criteria
The technical judges evaluated acceleration and braking capabilities using specialised equipment. Driving judges then tested vehicles on various circuits at speeds up to 55mph on challenging routes featuring steep gradients.
Judges also assessed how well cars joined fast traffic from a standstill and their stability at high speeds in controlled conditions. Reversing capabilities were examined alongside driver comfort and visibility.
Awards Ceremony
The results were announced at an awards ceremony held at the Royal Automobile Club in London on September 20th. Annabel Croft presented the awards to winners across various categories.
Nick Lomas from the Caravan and Motorhome Club congratulated all winners: "Our panel of independent judges provided unbiased information to help buyers choose their ideal towcar."
This year's competition highlighted diverse options for caravanners seeking reliable towcars across different categories including electric powertrains that continue advancing rapidly within this sector.
