Volkswagen Transporter Marks 70 Years Of Iconic Presence In The UK

The Volkswagen Transporter has reached a significant milestone, celebrating its 70th anniversary since its UK debut. Known by various names such as Bulli, Kombi, VW bus, or microbus, it was first introduced at the Commercial Motor Show in Earl’s Court, London in 1954. Over six generations, more than 13 million units have been sold globally.

Initially launched as a hand-built panel van prototype in 1949, the T1 became available as a rear-engine panel van, passenger van, and eight-seat vehicle. The engine and gearbox were derived from the Volkswagen Beetle, offering a maximum payload of 750kg. By 1967, around 1.9 million T1s had been sold worldwide.

The T2 model followed from 1967 to 1979, featuring a new front end and air intake grille. A sliding door became standard, and the pop-up roof camper version gained popularity among travellers. In 1972, an electric version was introduced. Production continued until 2013 at the Volkswagen plant in Sao Paulo.

The T3 generation (1979-1992) brought modern advancements with a wider body for more passenger and cargo space. It introduced diesel engines and improved safety features. Innovations like catalytic converters and all-wheel drive were added in 1985. Approximately 1.3 million T3s were produced in Hanover.

The T4 (1990-2003) marked a technical revolution with front-engine and front-wheel drive for the first time. This generation featured a longer front end, new suspension, varied engine choices, and better handling. The range expanded to include panel vans, kombis, double cabs, pickups, and chassis models.

The T5 (2003-2015) focused on interior design improvements and driver comfort while offering various petrol and diesel engines along with an all-wheel drive system. The California model was built in Hanover for the first time during this period.

With the introduction of the T6 in 2015 and its update to T6.1 in 2019, new engines and intelligent driver assistance systems were added. The two-tone paint scheme paid homage to the original model while incorporating modern technology like a redesigned dashboard and enhanced connectivity.

Future Prospects

The latest iteration of the Transporter will be unveiled at the IAA in Munich later this year and will be available in early 2025. This new model will feature a significantly larger load compartment and a digital cockpit landscape as standard to meet contemporary commercial vehicle requirements.

Decades before its UK success, Major Ivan Hirst played a pivotal role post-war by re-establishing the Volkswagen factory. He envisioned a load-carrying vehicle inspired by the Beetle platform which led to creating a flat-bed truck known as Plattenwagen for moving parts within the factory.

In the mid-1940s, Dutch importer Ben Pon proposed developing this concept into a more advanced panel van version after being drawn to the Plattenwagen truck idea.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles now offers an extensive range of models including compact Caddy vans, versatile Transporters, robust Crafter panel vans, dropsides and tippers alongside passenger carriers like Multivan and campervans such as Caddy California.

The company remains committed to providing top-notch products and aftersales support whether customers are purchasing one van or thousands.
