Sustainable First: Synthetic Fuel Powers Victory In Hagerty Radical Cup UK
Gavin McAlpine made history at the Hagerty Radical Cup UK by becoming the first driver to use synthetic fuel in the Championship. His green 'number 17' car, supported by RAW Motorsports, finished the race at Oulton Park Circuit using Coryton's SUSTAIN Super 80 fuel without any modifications to his SR3 XXR. Over 20,000 spectators witnessed this milestone event.
McAlpine has long been interested in sustainable fuels. He stated, "I have been exploring sustainable fuels for some years now. Two of the passions in my life are the natural world and the automotive world. I believe that technological developments are the solution to many of the world’s environmental issues, so being able to indulge now one of my passions and contribute to a sustainable low-carbon future is a great step forward for me personally, for the racing community, and of course the future of transportation."
Coryton's SUSTAIN fuels are primarily derived from second-generation biofuels made from agricultural waste like straw and crop by-products. These fuels recycle carbon already present in our atmosphere, unlike fossil fuels which release additional CO2. The SUSTAIN Super 80 fuel is a "drop-in fuel," meaning it can be mixed with traditional fossil petrols without requiring vehicle modifications.
Before the race weekend, Radical Motorsport's engineering team conducted extensive tests with SUSTAIN Super 80 fuel. They ensured no calibration was needed at the track and confirmed that using this fuel would not provide any competitive advantage or disadvantage compared to other cars running on championship-regulated fuel.
Jon Roach, Radical Motorsport’s Global Head of Marketing, commented on this development: "The recent developments in sustainable fuel are an exciting step forward for motorsport, offering an alternative solution that can be enjoyed by owners of older cars without the need to make any modifications, and without any impact on performance. Seeing one Radical on the grid here in the UK is a small step, but a step in the right direction and hopefully will provide the catalyst to start the right conversations."
David Richardson, New Business Director at Coryton, expressed his enthusiasm: "We’re delighted to be celebrating this sustainable first for the Hagerty Radical Cup UK and to have worked with Gavin and his team to make it happen. Through events like this, we can showcase the power of sustainable fuels and their ability to preserve the sights and sounds of motorsport, without relying on fossil fuel for our ICE engines. Every new milestone we mark takes us one step closer to a cleaner future, and we hope it inspires many more within the industry to explore the technology available."
