Stellantis’ Indiana Facility Marks Over 25 Million Safe Man-Hours
Stellantis' Indiana Transmission Plant (ITP) has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 25 million man-hours without a lost time injury. This achievement spans over 2,225 days or just over nine years. "ITP’s remarkable accomplishment reinforces Stellantis’ commitment to fostering a culture of safety across all our facilities," said Tobin J. Williams, senior vice president for human resources, Stellantis North America.
ITP is not alone in this achievement. The Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, and the Saltillo North Engine Plant in Mexico have also reached impressive milestones with more than 44 million and 32 million man-hours worked without a lost time injury, respectively. "ITP, Brampton Assembly and Saltillo North Engine are truly leading by example with their focus on safety first," said Michael J. Resha, head of manufacturing, Stellantis North America.

The Indiana Transmission Plant assembles six- and nine-speed transmissions for Stellantis vehicles. Earlier this year, the plant integrated backup cameras into its powered industrial vehicle (PIV) tugger fleets’ safety systems. These cameras activate when the PIV is in reverse, enhancing visibility around the vehicle.
Additionally, the team upgraded hitch/lever connection systems on PIV tuggers to eliminate pinch points and reduce the force needed to open the hitch during delivery. These upgrades led to a more than 50% decrease in the total PIV tugger Job Safety Risk Assessment (JSRA) score and nearly eliminated the need for operators to get off the tugger.
Motion sensors were also installed on all internal doors to detect pedestrian or PIV movement. These sensors trigger flashing red LED lights to alert both pedestrians and PIV operators of potential traffic, ensuring safe passage through intersections.
Commitment to Employee Wellbeing
Management at ITP is dedicated to fostering a culture of safety through daily one-on-one Wellbeing, Health & Safety (WHS) conversations with employees. Since August 2023, there have been over 8,000 WHS conversations recorded, enhancing safety knowledge across the shop floor and fostering employee mentorship.
"For ITP, this milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our Kokomo team in upholding safety as a core value," said David Dukes, Indiana Transmission plant manager. "Our top priority is ensuring that our employees return home safely to their families each day."
Stellantis North America is known for producing iconic brands such as Jeep®, Chrysler, Dodge//SRT, Ram, Alfa Romeo and Fiat. The company aims to provide clean, safe and affordable mobility for all while executing its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan to become a carbon net zero mobility tech company by 2038.
The ITP team continues to seek ways to improve safety measures further. Their recent upgrades have significantly reduced JSRA-classified strain/sprains and improved overall workplace safety.
"By prioritizing the well-being of our employees, we not only ensure their individual safety but also contribute to the overall success and sustainability of our operations," added Tobin J. Williams.
This achievement underscores Stellantis' dedication to maintaining high safety standards across its facilities while continuously seeking improvements for future operations.
