Stellantis Announces $3.3 Million In Home Repair Grants For Detroit Neighbours

Stellantis has announced a collaboration with Detroit to offer $3.3 million in home repair grants for residents near the Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack (DAC-M). This initiative reallocates unspent funds from the Mack development project, following community feedback. The program, managed by Detroit’s Housing & Revitalization Department, includes $2.7 million in unused project funds and $600,000 from the Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) Neighborhood Impact Fund.

Residents interested in these grants should contact the Housing & Revitalization Department at (313) 628-2231 for more details. Applications will be available starting January 2025. Stellantis has been committed to supporting the community since establishing the first new assembly plant in over 30 years in Detroit. Christine Estereicher, vice president of public affairs at Stellantis North America, stated, "In listening to our neighbors, we recognized there was additional need for home repairs, so redirecting these funds where they could do the most good was an easy decision."

Stellantis Provides $3.3 Million for Home Repairs

Since 2019, Stellantis has allocated over $5 million for home repairs in the area. This funding is part of broader investments by Stellantis to enhance community infrastructure around its plant. Previously, $1.8 million was designated for home repairs under the CBA and used between 2020 and 2021 to assist about 120 homeowners on Detroit's east side.

The company has also invested significantly in local projects over five years. These include a $4 million investment to establish the Advanced Manufacturing Academy at Southeastern High School with Detroit Public Schools Community District and a $1.4 million commitment to mitigate construction impacts of the plant.

Efforts to reduce environmental impact include creating a stormwater park that serves as both a rainwater control measure and a recreational space for residents. Additionally, vegetative buffers and bioswales have been implemented to further manage stormwater runoff effectively.

Stellantis has planted 1,100 trees on DAC-M property and nearby areas to improve air quality and stormwater management while enhancing green spaces by transforming vacant lots into gardens and parks. These efforts have eliminated blighted homes and expanded tree cover.

Detroit Assembly Complex-Mack Overview

The Detroit Assembly Complex-Mack was launched in 2019 with a $1.6 billion investment aimed at converting the Mack Avenue Engine Complex into a manufacturing site for Jeep vehicles. Production began in 2021 with models like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee L being manufactured here.

This facility is notable as Michigan’s first production site for Stellantis to build plug-in hybrids such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. The company’s strategic plan, Dare Forward 2030, aims for carbon net zero status by 2038 while delivering value across its stakeholder spectrum.

Cultural Contributions and Future Plans

To honour Detroit's east side legacy, Stellantis funded a mural along Beniteau Street created by Dr. Hubert Massey and local artists. Additionally, $200,000 was invested in community projects within Chandler Park, West End, and Riverbend neighborhoods.

Stellantis continues its commitment through educational initiatives like establishing an Automotive Manufacturing Program in Mechatronics at Wayne County Community College Eastern Campus. These efforts reflect Stellantis’ dedication to fostering sustainable development while supporting local communities around its facilities.
