Ensuring Safe School Commutes: GEM Shares Essential Tips
GEM Motoring Assist is urging parents and children to prioritise safety on their journeys to and from school. As the new school year starts, GEM highlights the importance of road safety awareness for everyone, from toddlers to senior citizens. This call to action comes in light of the alarming statistic that over 30 children are killed or seriously injured each week on UK roads.
James Luckhurst, GEM's head of road safety, emphasises the need for children to learn safe road usage. He states, "Every child needs to learn how to use the roads safely, whether walking or cycling, and later when driving." He adds that road collisions remain a leading cause of accidental death for children and can result in life-changing injuries. Therefore, it's crucial for everyone to take responsibility for their own safety and that of children sharing the roads.

To reduce risks, GEM has compiled several tips for parents and children as they embark on the new school year. One key recommendation is to avoid using cars for school runs whenever possible. Instead, parents are encouraged to explore healthier alternatives like local safe walking initiatives or teaming up with neighbours for group walks.
For those who must drive, GEM advises allowing ample time to park safely and legally. Avoid stopping on zig-zag lines outside schools and respect local residents by not blocking driveways. Additionally, adhering to speed limits around schools is essential; many areas have 20mph limits, and violations can result in fines and points on your licence.
Fluorescent clothing and reflective items can make children more visible to drivers in low-light conditions. Items like reflective belts, bags, keyrings, or coats with fluorescent piping are recommended. These measures help ensure that kids are easily seen by motorists during darker hours.
Luckhurst further encourages all adults involved in children's lives—parents, guardians, teachers, carers, and older siblings—to help them understand road risks and effective ways to minimise them. "So as another school year begins," he says, "we encourage all parents, guardians, teachers, carers and older siblings to play their part in helping children to use the roads with respect."
Supporting Crossing Patrols
Drivers should also do their part by supporting crossing patrols. Patience is key; always be prepared to stop when signalled by a patrol officer. It's important to remember that failing to stop at a patrol's signal is an offence.
If older children do not need escorting into school premises but are driven there, ensure they exit the car safely onto the pavement rather than stepping into the road. This simple step can significantly enhance their safety during drop-offs.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents provides additional context by noting that these measures are vital given the high number of child casualties on UK roads each week.
GEM Motoring Assist offers two levels of recovery service: Recovery EXTRA and Recovery RECLAIM. These services cater to various needs and budgets while providing comprehensive roadside assistance and vehicle recovery options.
Established in 1932 as an independent driver-based road safety association, GEM aims to improve safety for all road users through accident prevention measures across the UK. Member benefits include a quarterly magazine, free literature and advice, plus discounts on insurance and other services.
