Palou Strengthens Championship Lead With Second-Place In Honda Indy 200
Alex Palou narrowly missed his third win of 2024, finishing second in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2025 Civic Hybrid. Despite leading for 53 laps, a delay during his final pit stop allowed Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward to overtake him. The race marked the debut of INDYCAR's hybrid Energy Recovery System.
This weekend's event introduced the new hybrid system to the full 27-car field. The system includes a Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and an Energy Storage System (ESS) developed by Honda Racing Corporation USA. The hybrid power added a strategic element to the race, making it more engaging for both drivers and fans.
Starting from pole position, Palou led all but two of the first 55 laps. However, a brief issue with engaging first gear during his final pit stop saw him return to the track just behind O'Ward. The two drivers battled fiercely for the remaining laps, with Palou finishing just 0.4993 seconds behind.
Andretti Global drivers Colton Herta and Marcus Ericsson finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Herta expressed satisfaction with the hybrid system's performance, stating, "For our #26 team side of things, we just wanted to have a clean first race with the hybrid—no reliability problems, check all the boxes for what we wanted it to do. And it did that!"
Ericsson also praised the hybrid power, saying it was fun to use strategically throughout the race. He added that it was a good day overall for his team.
Honda's Dominance at Mid-Ohio
Honda drivers have now won 12 of the 19 Indy car races held at Mid-Ohio since 2007. Last year, Chip Ganassi Racing Honda teammates Alex Palou and Scott Dixon finished first and second at this venue. This year’s race further solidified Honda’s strong performance history at Mid-Ohio.
David Salters, President of Honda Racing Corporation USA, commented on the hybrid debut: "First thing, a massive shout out to our boys and girls for the huge effort that went into getting us here. It's a completely new hybrid system... We can be proud of coming within half a second of winning the first hybrid race."
Upcoming Races
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES continues next weekend with its first short oval and doubleheader race weekend of 2024 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. The Hy-Vee Homefront 250 will take place on Saturday night, followed by the Hy-Vee One Step 250 on Sunday.
In addition to Palou's second-place finish, other notable results include Christian Lundgaard finishing seventh and Kyle Kirkwood eighth in their Andretti Hondas. David Malukas placed twelfth for Meyer Shank Racing Honda.
The unofficial standings after nine of seventeen rounds show Chevrolet leading with 724 points while Honda closely follows with 720 points in the Manufacturers' Championship.
Palou reflected on his performance: "That was very, very close! It's a shame we couldn't make the alternate tires work and be better... Racing with the hybrid was a ton of fun."
The introduction of INDYCAR’s new hybrid system has added an exciting dimension to racing strategy and competition dynamics. As teams continue to adapt and optimise their use of this technology, future races promise even more thrilling contests.
