Nissan Eyes Top Standings In Season 10's Penultimate Formula E Races In Portland

Nissan Formula E Team is gearing up for the Portland International Raceway in Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The team currently holds third place in the standings with four races left, following a strong showing in Shanghai where Oliver Rowland earned points in both races.

Formula E's return to Oregon marks its second visit, featuring a double-header at the Portland circuit. Last year's inaugural race saw Nissan excel in qualifying, securing second and third on the grid, with Sacha Fenestraz starting from the front row. This year, similar peloton-style races are anticipated, focusing on energy management and late sprints.

The 3.19-kilometer track offers ample overtaking opportunities, especially into Turn 1 before a tight chicane leading into a technical section. Exiting Turn 8 presents a right kink onto the long back straight, providing another chance to pass into the final corners of the Portland International Raceway.

Formula E's visit to the USA is significant for Nissan, which has operated in the country since 1960 and has its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee. The company employs 21,000 people and sold over 800,000 vehicles in 2023.

Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal of Nissan Formula E Team, expressed pride in their consistent performance: "We're delighted to arrive in the USA third in the teams' championship going into the penultimate weekend of action. We're one of only two teams to have scored points in every round since Race 3, and I'm extremely proud of the whole crew for this! But we know we're going to have to continue to work hard to maintain our position."

Oliver Rowland shared his optimism: "It's been an all-round very positive season for us as a team, and we're looking to continue this into the penultimate event. I've never raced around Portland before, but I'm confident that I can get in tune with the track quickly so that we can score some good points."

Drivers' Insights

Sacha Fenestraz reflected on their preparation: "The last few months have been intense with a lot of racing and travelling, so the break was welcome to get ready to head into these last two weekends freshly prepared. It's important now to maximize the opportunities in front of us and to make sure that we finish as high as possible in the teams' standings."

The action kicks off with FP1 on Friday, followed by qualifying at 09:40 (UTC-7) and the E-Prix at 14:03 (UTC-7) on both Saturday and Sunday.

Nissan's Commitment

Nissan debuted in Formula E during Season 5 (2018/19), becoming Japan's first manufacturer in the series. In Season 7 (2020/21), Nissan committed long-term to Formula E through Season 12 (2025/26). In April 2022, Nissan acquired e.dams race team and took full ownership of its involvement.

In June 2022, Nissan announced it would supply its EV powertrain technology to McLaren Racing for Formula E Gen3 era. For Season 10, Oliver Rowland and Sacha Fenestraz are driving for Nissan Formula E Team.

Future Prospects

On March 28th, ahead of Tokyo E-Prix, Nissan reaffirmed its commitment by signing up for Gen4 era until 2030. This move aligns with their Ambition 2030 electrification targets. Nissan aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 across operations and product life cycles.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is notable for being certified net zero carbon from inception since 2020. The series promotes sustainable mobility by racing electric cars on street circuits worldwide.

Nissan leverages its racing experience to enhance electric vehicle technology for consumers while promoting zero-emission vehicles globally.
