Next-Gen Mercedes S-Class: A Unified Strategy For ICE & EV

The next-generation Mercedes S-Class and EQS sedans will be unified under a single name. This decision aims to reduce the distinction between internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) versions, addressing the declining sales of both models.

Both the ICE and EV versions of the upcoming S-Class will share similar exterior and interior designs. However, they will be built on different platforms. The electric S-Class and the next-gen EQE are expected to use Mercedes' new MB.EA Large EV platform. Meanwhile, the ICE version will continue on an updated MRA platform.

Next-Gen S-Class: A Unified Approach

Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the EQS name, introduced in 2021 for its flagship EV sedan, will be phased out. "There will be two S-Classes in the future – ICE and electric," he told Autocar UK. This move is part of a broader strategy to streamline their offerings.

The unification comes amid a significant drop in sales for both models. The S-Class saw a 37 percent decline in sales during the first quarter of this year. Additionally, Mercedes' projection that EVs would make up over 20 percent of global sales in 2023 fell short by 9 percent, despite a 73 percent increase from the previous year.

Adapting to Market Realities

In response to these challenges, Mercedes has postponed its target for achieving a 50 percent share of EV (plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle) sales from 2025 to 2030. The company has also rolled back plans to become an EV-only brand by 2030. Instead, they are extending the lifespan of key ICE models by investing in electrifying existing engines to meet regulatory requirements well into the 2030s.

The current pricing for the Mercedes EQS stands at Rs 1.62 crore, while the S-Class ranges between Rs 1.77 crore and Rs 1.86 crore. Additionally, Mercedes offers an SUV version of the EQS abroad, which is set to launch in India as a Maybach variant on September 5.

This strategic shift reflects Mercedes' efforts to balance its portfolio between traditional ICE vehicles and newer EV models while adapting to market demands and regulatory pressures.

By unifying these models under one nameplate, Mercedes aims to simplify its lineup and potentially boost sales by offering customers more cohesive choices without compromising on design or performance. This approach could help Mercedes navigate through evolving automotive trends while maintaining its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
