1 In 4 Automotive Workers Face Mental Health Challenges, Report Finds
It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and the automotive industry charity, Ben, has unveiled a new report highlighting findings from its latest survey. The survey reveals that over 1 in 4 automotive workers (27%) reported difficulties managing their mental health, compared to 16% of UK workers overall. This indicates a more significant issue within the automotive sector.
The survey also found that an overwhelming 99.6% of automotive employees have faced a health and wellbeing issue over the past year. Stress remains the most common issue at 56%, followed by poor sleep (51%), anxiety (43%), and low mood (41%). These results underscore the prominence of mental health issues among the top concerns affecting individuals in this industry.
Additionally, 7 in 10 respondents expressed worries about money, which correlates with increased feelings of anxiety, low mood, and depression. The number of people concerned about financial matters has risen from the previous year (6 in 10), likely due to cost-of-living pressures. Debt has increased by 3% (19% to 22%), inability to budget by 12% (14% to 26%), inability to save by 5% (31% to 36%), and skipping meals by 6% (10% to 16%).
The survey also revealed that 1 in 7 automotive workers are contemplating leaving the industry, with pay being the primary motivator for this decision (29%). Among those considering leaving, 87% have experienced financial issues, and 63% are dealing with stress at work.
This year's survey was Ben’s largest to date, with a record participation of 1,872 automotive employees from various UK regions, ages, genders, and working environments. Now in its seventh year, the survey aims to identify key health and wellbeing issues affecting the automotive workforce so Ben can continue providing relevant support.

Our annual surveys allow us to understand their struggles better and provide necessary support. We also share these insights with employers and industry stakeholders to enhance support for automotive people and their families."
Mental health issues affect one in four individuals in the automotive sector, with financial worries contributing significantly. More people are struggling with cost-of-living pressures, leading to increased issues such as skipping meals and debt. This impacts overall health and wellbeing, including both physical and mental health.
