Maserati Secures Top Two Spots In Fanatec GT2 European Series At Spa
Maserati returned to Spa-Francorchamps for round 3 of the Fanatec GT2 European Series Powered by Pirelli, marking a year since their car and sports plans were revealed. During the same weekend as the 24 Hours of Spa, Maserati's three GT2s shone brightly on Friday. LP Racing's number 1 car, driven by Leonardo Gorini and Carlo Tamburini, secured a one-two finish in Race 1, with teammate Philippe Prette winning in the Am class.
In Race 2, held on Saturday morning, Prette had to pit early due to a puncture, affecting his race significantly. Tamburini started well but dropped to eighth after contact with another car. Gorini took over from Tamburini during the mandatory pit window and tried to recover but had to pit again due to another puncture, finishing tenth. Leroy maintained a steady pace and finished sixth overall and third in the Am class.
During qualifying for Race 1, Maseratis dominated by taking the top three spots. Alexandre Leroy achieved his first pole position of the season. At the start of the race, Leroy led but was soon overtaken by Gorini in the number 1 Maserati GT2. After a few laps, Gorini handed over to Tamburini, who made an error at Les Combes, allowing Prette to close in significantly. Despite this mistake, Tamburini crossed the finish line first with Prette just 2.8 seconds behind.
The third Maserati from TFT Racing team’s number 24 car driven by Alexandre Leroy finished second in the Am class and fifth overall in Race 1. In Race 2, Leroy secured third place in his class after maintaining a consistent performance throughout the race.
The next event for Maserati is round 4 of the Fanatec GT2 European Series Powered by Pirelli at Hockenheim, Germany from July 19 to July 21. Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse stated: "Our winning streak with Maserati GT2 continues: I couldn't have hoped for anything better this weekend at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, despite a bit of bad luck in Race 2."
Sgro added that achieving first and second places in Race 1 showcases their development of an outstanding car for motorsport customers and professional racing teams. He emphasised that Maserati’s racing spirit is evident across all their cars from MC20 to MCXtrema.
