Kia Focuses On EV Production At Gwangmyeong EVO Plant | Inaugural Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Facility

Today marks a significant milestone for Kia Corporation with the inauguration of the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, the Hyundai Motor Group's inaugural dedicated electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing site. Situated in Kia Autoland Gwangmyeong, this South Korean facility boasts an impressive annual production capability of 150,000 units.

It has already commenced the manufacturing of the Kia EV3 in the earlier part of this year and is set to start production of the EV4 in the first half of 2025. The plant's name, derived from 'Evolution', signifies Kia's commitment to progress and leadership in the evolving mobility landscape.

The establishment of the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant is a pivotal step for Kia towards becoming a frontrunner in the EV domain, particularly following the brand's 2021 relaunch. "The completion of the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant solidifies Kia's first step as an EV leader following the company's brand relaunch in 2021.

With the goal of providing sustainable mobility solutions, we will lead innovation in the EV market and fulfil our responsibilities in helping to deliver a sustainable future," stated Jun Young Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Domestic Production Division at Kia, in his welcome speech.

The facility's opening was celebrated with a ceremony attended by approximately 150 guests, including high-profile figures such as Jun Young Choi from Kia, Seung Won Park, the Mayor of Gwangmyeong City, and O Kyeong Lim and Nam Hee Kim, Members of the 22nd National Assembly of the Republic of Korea.

Highlighting the plant's significance to the local economy, Seung Won Park remarked, "The completion of the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant will help Gwangmyeong City to establish itself at the center of the EV industry in Korea. Through this we will strive to promote sustainable development of the local economy and create more jobs."

In preparing for the surge in global EV demand, Kia's strategic move includes the transformation of Gwangmyeong Plant 2, initially completed in 1987 for producing small internal combustion engine vehicles. This conversion into the Group's first dedicated EV facility represents a monumental shift towards next-generation vehicle production.

The Gwangmyeong EVO Plant not only stands as a testament to this shift but also showcases an investment of KRW 401.6 billion over an area of roughly 60,000 square meters, destined to become a central hub for Kia's popular EV models.

The theme of 'pursuing maximum change through minimal expansion' encapsulates the ethos behind the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant's design. This consideration is particularly pertinent given its urban location and the need to protect local green spaces. The plant embodies a move towards eco-friendly and worker-friendly manufacturing processes.

Notably, the body shop has been upgraded to a high-tech logistics factory with the introduction of automated guided vehicle (AGV) forklifts, while the paint shop has enhanced its environmental credentials by switching to the water-based 3C1B method from the oil-based 3C2B method.

Moreover, new equipment has been installed to support the wellbeing of plant workers, including devices for the automatic installation of high-voltage batteries, wheels, and tires.

Kia's Gwangmyeong EVO Plant is set to play a crucial role in the brand's journey towards electrification, with the mass production of the Kia EV3 already underway. This compact all-electric SUV is the company's third dedicated EV model, following the launches of the all-electric crossover SUV, Kia EV6, in 2021, and the all-electric flagship SUV, Kia EV9, in 2023.
