Protect Your Dogs From Heatstroke In Cars, Advises GEM Motoring Assist

Dogs can overheat quickly and struggle to cool down. A dog left in a car can suffer heatstroke within 15 minutes. If you’re worried about a dog’s welfare, contact the police immediately.

GEM Motoring Assist is urging dog owners to keep their pets cool during car journeys. With forecasters predicting warm weather this week, GEM warns of the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars. Cars parked in sunny spots heat up rapidly, and even short periods in such conditions can make dogs seriously ill.

Keep Dogs Cool in Warm Weather

Dogs can't cool down as easily as humans. Even if you feel comfortable in the car, your dog might be overheated and dehydrated. Keep a close eye on your dog during journeys to ensure they are coping well. Use sun blinds and open windows to allow air circulation in the car.

James Luckhurst, GEM's head of road safety, emphasised: "Your dog's welfare needs to be a priority. So, if you're planning a day out and the weather is hot, it may well be in the dog's best interests to be left at home." He added that simple precautions could prevent dogs from overheating in cars.

GEM provides practical advice to ensure pets stay happy and healthy during car journeys. Take plenty of water on long trips and bring your dog's usual food. Monitor how your dog is coping throughout the journey. Remember that a comfortable temperature for you might still be too hot for your dog.

If your dog dislikes car journeys, start with short trips and reward them with treats or a long walk afterward. Always park in shaded areas but remember that even short periods in a hot car can make your dog seriously ill.

Recognising Heatstroke Symptoms

Panting excessively, dribbling, and vomiting are signs of heatstroke in dogs. If you suspect your dog has overheated, contact a vet immediately. Lay the dog somewhere cool, offer small amounts of water, and place a cool, wet towel over it.

If you see a dog inside a car and are concerned about its welfare, try to alert the owner first. If this isn't possible, call 999 for the police or contact the RSPCA via their 24-hour helpline at 0300 1234 999.

GEM Motoring Assist offers two levels of recovery service: Recovery EXTRA and Recovery RECLAIM, catering to various needs and budgets. They provide comprehensive roadside assistance and vehicle recovery services at competitive prices.

Established in 1932 as an independent driver-based road safety association, GEM aims to improve safety for all road users through accident prevention measures across the UK. Member benefits include a quarterly magazine, free literature and advice, and discounts on insurance and other services.
