India Experiences A Boom In CNG Vehicle Popularity Amid Eco-Friendly Shift

India is experiencing a surge in the popularity of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles. This trend has prompted automakers to focus more on CNG-powered models. Not only are four-wheeler manufacturers investing in this segment, but two-wheeler makers are also joining the fray.

Bajaj, for instance, recently introduced the world’s first CNG-powered two-wheeler, named Bajaj Freedom 125. Similarly, TVS is gearing up to launch the world’s first CNG scooter, based on their popular Jupiter model.

India s Rising Trend in CNG Vehicles

CNG vehicles are gaining significant traction in India, leading automakers to prioritise them. Maruti Suzuki's WagonR CNG exemplifies this trend. The company offers CNG options across 14 of its car models, but the WagonR CNG stands out with remarkable sales figures.

The WagonR CNG accounts for 46% of Maruti Suzuki's total CNG car sales. Following closely is the Brezza SUV, which holds a 26% share, while the remaining 28% is distributed among the other 12 models.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is available in both petrol and CNG variants in India. It is one of the company's most crucial models among its 14 CNG offerings. The WagonR CNG starts at Rs. 6.44 lakhs (ex-showroom price) and boasts a mileage of up to 33.47 km per kg of CNG.

In real-world conditions, it delivers between 28 km to 30 km per kg. This impressive mileage and affordable price contribute to its popularity among Indian consumers. Notably, the CNG option is available only in the LXI and VXI variants of the WagonR.

Automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai are fiercely competing in the CNG segment due to its growing demand. Hyundai recently launched its Exter CNG model with a dual-cylinder option to capture the attention of Indian buyers. This move highlights Hyundai's strategy to stay competitive in this expanding market.

Two-wheeler manufacturers are also exploring the potential of CNG technology. Bajaj's launch of the Freedom 125 marks a significant milestone as it is the world's first CNG-powered two-wheeler. TVS is set to follow suit with a CNG scooter based on their Jupiter model, further diversifying the options available to consumers.

The increasing sales of CNG vehicles in India have led companies like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai to introduce more models in this segment. Hyundai's recent launch of the Exter CNG with a dual-cylinder option is a testament to this trend.

The success of Maruti Suzuki's WagonR CNG underscores the growing acceptance of these vehicles among Indian consumers. With competitive pricing and excellent mileage, it continues to be a preferred choice for many.

The automotive industry in India is witnessing a shift towards more eco-friendly options like CNG vehicles. As manufacturers continue to innovate and expand their offerings, consumers can expect more choices that cater to their needs for economical and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
