Hyundai Motor Collaborates With UN World Food Programme To Enhance Sustainability Efforts

Hyundai Motor Company has donated eight IONIQ 5 electric vehicles and funds for developing EV-charging infrastructure to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This initiative is part of Hyundai's strategic partnership with the WFP, a leading humanitarian aid agency. The donation aims to support WFP’s sustainability efforts in seven countries, including Egypt, Italy, Panama, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and the UAE.

The collaboration between Hyundai and WFP aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and WFP’s energy efficiency programme. It reflects Hyundai's brand vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’. The deployment of IONIQ 5 vehicles will help address the global food crisis exacerbated by climate change. According to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, 757 million people face hunger daily due to climate change.

On November 14, Hyundai Motor participated in an IONIQ 5 hand-over ceremony at WFP’s Fleet Center in Dubai. Key attendees included Hang-Soo Lee and Hyeon-Sook Heo from Hyundai Motor Group, alongside Sara Adam and Stephen Anderson from WFP. "This partnership goes beyond merely providing vehicles and funds," stated Lee. "It signifies our commitment to being an electric mobility partner of the world’s largest humanitarian aid organization."

The eco-friendly IONIQ 5 vehicles will diversify WFP's fleet while promoting sustainable mobility solutions within the United Nations system. Sara Adam expressed excitement about collaborating with Hyundai on infrastructure development to ensure effective vehicle operation. This collaboration aims to foster more resilient and sustainable practices for humanitarian operations.

Hyundai is also contributing funds for EV-charging infrastructure development in these countries. The funds will support WFP’s energy efficiency programme aimed at reducing greenhouse gases by establishing charging stations and renewable energy systems where EVs are deployed. This initiative marks Hyundai's second collaboration with the UN following a 2020 agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The agreement with WFP was formalized last July when Jaehoon Chang of Hyundai Motor Company met Cindy McCain of WFP in Korea. Partnering with WFP aligns with Hyundai's commitment to global sustainable development under its brand vision ‘Progress for Humanity’. The partnership underscores both organizations' dedication to advancing environmentally sustainable practices worldwide.
